Tell me you’re an 80’s Christian kid without telling me you’re an 80’s Christian kid…

I grew up watching old classic musicals with my mom and grandma, but a whole world opened up to me when I stumbled upon the pro shot of Hi Tops starring Ernie Retino (who I’d grown up listening to as Psalty) and whose voice was magic to my young ears (still is, honestly). I don’t know how many times I watched the VHS. But you know you’re a real fan when you have the cassette of the entire musical too.

And THEN, my mom, who worked in a Christian bookstore, brought home a cassette and music book to Friends Forever. I never saw the production, but I nearly wore out this tape—especially listening to Friends, which of course we ALL know is the defining song of the late 80s. I won the 8th grade talent show singing this musical’s arrangement of Friends. I now feel immense compassion for my poor mother for having to listen to me practice for hours and days and weeks on end and then continuing to sing it in front of every member of our family that following summer. 😂

I’d forgotten I still had these tapes until cleaning out my desk today. Gonna have to dig around to find a tape deck so I can give these gems another listen. 🫠 Now if only I still had the soundtracks to People Need the Lord and Let’s Go to the Rock, which I actually got to perform in middle and high school with my youth groups. 😆

Missing my oldest girl, but we sure had a nice time at our annual Mother’s Day excursion to the botanic gardens. ☺️ I love any excuse I can get to wander through nature in the spring when there’s good light, flowers in bloom, a nice breeze, and people I love. 💕
