Back at the beginning of Trump’s second term, DOGE’s search for DEI-related programs caused the USDA to cancel more than $127 million in grants that gave underserved and new farmers access to affordable land, markets, training, financing, and more. Among the farmers affected were tribal members who were lumped in with DEI initiatives.

A coalition of land trusts, local governments, and Native organizations is now suing, saying longstanding federal policies recognize tribes as sovereign political entities, not racial groups.
