Does your dog need the bordatella vaccine? Well, that depends on lifestyle. Does your furry friend go to dog parks, grooming salons, boarding kennels, or group training classes? If yes, then he or she probably needs a bordatella vaccination. Bordatella is one pathogen that causes kennel cough, a highly contagious upper respiratory infection that somewhat resembles a cold or flu in humans. A healthy adult dog can often fight off the bug on his/her own in a few days, but sometimes vet care is necessary. Kennel cough is most common in places where a number of dogs from different households spend time in close quarters. The above examples are only a few possibilities. Here, Riley hangs out with a short-term roommate being fostered for another rescue. Riley and her permanent doggie roommates are all vaccinated against bordatella because fosters come through their home, sometimes directly from a shelter, where bordatella is common. Thus, they could be unintentionally exposed, particularly if the new dog isn't showing symptoms yet. (No, the dog in the photo isn't sick.)
We offer bordatella vaccines at all our clinics. The vaccination requires a yearly booster to maintain protection. Our next low-cost community pet vaccination clinic is July 25. Sign up at Tinyurl.com/YKMYCEBM
