Today I hate social media.

The first thing that popped up in my feed this morning was a couple sharing that they had aborted their baby at 5 months in utero after learning their child would be born with Down syndrome.

I can't stop crying.

Before I say anything else, I need to tell you something I've never shared publicly online.

When I was 17 years old, I had an abortion.

I didn't know Jesus then. I was scared, broken, and trying to survive. I wish I could tell you that life went on and I never thought about it again, but that wouldn't be true. The guilt, shame, and grief followed me for years.

So today, I have no stones to throw.

I know what it feels like to make a choice you can't take back. I know what it feels like to carry that weight.

Then, when I was 21 years old, I met a man, a man named Jesus.

He saved me. He forgave me. He redeemed me. He took my deepest shame and covered it with His grace.

That is why my heart breaks today. Not only for the baby that was lost, but for the parents, especially Ashley, who will now carry a grief she may not yet understand.

What also breaks my heart is the fear surrounding Down syndrome.

I've worked with people with special needs since I was in high school. We've intentionally created opportunities for people with special needs at Beloved Cheesecakes because they are such a blessing to our team and to our world.

I wholeheartedly believe they are among the closest reflections of Jesus we experience here on earth. They love unconditionally. They welcome everyone. They find joy in the little things. They don't care about status, politics, money, or appearance. They simply love.

Which brings me to our Julia. 💜

Julia joined the Beloved Cheesecakes family nine months ago. She loves Dr Pepper, hugs, singing, dancing, bowling, and sleepovers with her friends. She carefully labels the parchment rounds for our sampler cheesecakes so our shipping customers know exactly which flavors they're receiving.

But what Julia really does is bring joy. Every room she enters is brighter because she's in it.

Julia, we love you.❤️ You matter. Your life has immeasurable value, and our world is better because you're in it.

Every life matters.
Every child matters.
And every person is worthy of love.
