The New York State Office of General Services (OGS) is dedicated to curating, preserving, and conserving New York’s state-owned art collections, including some of the remarkable pieces that grace the halls of our Capitol.
Yesterday, we celebrated the return of the recently conserved portrait of George Washington by Ezra Ames, which is once again on display in the New York State Capitol’s State Street Lobby.
OGS was joined by representatives from the New York State Museum and the Williamstown + Atlanta Art Conservation Center, alongside former Albany County Historian and NYS Assemblymember Jack McEneny, NYS Senator Patricia A. Fahy, and NYS Assemblymember McDonald.
Welcoming those in attendance, OGS Director of Curatorial & Visitor Services Joseph Madeira highlighted the importance of preservation: “Our collections are not simply decorative features; they are tangible connections to the people, events, and ideals that have shaped our state and nation.”
Ezra Ames’ George Washington portrait can be viewed, along with many other historical artifacts and artwork, during free weekday tours of the New York State Capitol and Empire State Plaza. Learn more and book your tour at: on.ny.gov/tours
