Singer-songwriter and pianist John Ondrasik opted for a stage moniker. However, instead of Reg Dwight becoming Elton John, Ondrasik became Five For Fighting as a one-man band project before an actual band was ever assembled.

He signed with EMI Music during the post-alternative era, when labels were taking chances on new artists, and released his debut LP, A Message for Albert, in early 1997. It earned solid reviews, drawing comparisons to Billy Joel and others in the soft rock/adult pop section of the record shop. Unfortunately, shortly after the album’s release, the EMI division he was signed to collapsed, leaving him to rethink his plans.

It took a couple of years, but with enough positive, earthy-crunchy vibes in his tank, he was picked up by Aware Records, a subsidiary of Columbia, which released his sophomore effort, America Town, in the fall of 2000. The time between labels gave him the opportunity to assemble a highly focused batch of songs for the new album.

With tracks like “Easy Tonight” and “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” both released as singles, the strong reviews kept coming as his audience grew. The album just missed the U.S. Top 50 but, over time, achieved platinum status in the United States while also gaining a large following in Australia and Canada.

We will feature America Town throughout the day on Thursday, June 11. Tune in and check it out! - Dave Swanson

Great show last night in Boulder! Dylan Gossett, Sierra Ferrell, and Mumford & Sons. Sierra even came out and did a duet in ‘Here,’ and another song in the ‘B’ stage. The crowd was off the chain. During ‘Ditmas,’ Marcus went all the way to the top seats at the opposite end of the stadium and sang in the crowd.
