One of the goals of our ESL classes is to help adult learners feel more confident communicating in every area of their lives. Over the last few weeks, our learners took field trips to the Adrian District Library and the Adrian Fire Department to practice real-world skills and learn about valuable community resources.
At the library, Lizbeth and Bella introduced learners to the many resources available both in person and online. Several learners left with new library cards and already have digital reading and audiobook apps downloaded on their phones!
Captain Mike Springer warmly welcomed us into the firehouse for an unforgettable visit. Highlights included a live 911 call he made to dispatch, which reinforced emergency communication skills learners had practiced in class, and the opportunity to witness a real call for paramedics come in while we were there.
We all learned something new that day: in an emergency, you can text 911, and dispatchers will text back the same questions they would ask during a phone call.
A huge thank you to the Adrian District Library and the Adrian Fire Department for opening their doors and helping provide practical, real-life learning experiences for our students. Community partnerships like these help build confidence, connections, and stronger futures for our learners.
