Dark fishing spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus)
They are known for their hunting prowess near water, where they catch small fish, tadpoles, and aquatic insects. They are skilled hunters that can walk, row, or even run across the water's surface to capture prey. Additionally, they can dive underwater to hunt or escape predators, trapping air bubbles to breathe while submerged.
This female is carrying around her egg sac suspended beneath her body using her fangs (chelicerae). These sacs can contain up to 1,400 eggs. Before the eggs hatch, the female spider constructs a nursery web, often suspending the egg sac within it, and then guards the emerging spiderlings.
