Statement from Dallas Police Association President Sean Pease about the Mavericks, Plano Stars, and the World Cup

Yesterday, we learned the Dallas Mavericks are leaving downtown for North Dallas. Today, we learned the Dallas Stars are leaving Dallas altogether for Plano.

The Mavericks’ move will undoubtedly impact downtown, but it may also bring new life to North Dallas. The Stars leaving Dallas is different. Losing another major professional sports franchise to the suburbs should concern everyone who cares about the future of our city.

These announcements come just days before FIFA Fan Fest begins and as Dallas prepares to host the largest sporting event in the world.

When the Dallas Police Association first learned the World Cup was coming to Dallas, we were excited for the opportunity. We were also concerned.

Concerned that city leaders would once again ask police officers and firefighters to carry the burden while others collected the benefits.

Two months ago, I publicly warned that staffing FIFA events with on-duty personnel would weaken patrol operations, delay investigations, and negatively impact public safety. We pushed for a solution that protected both the public and our officers.

Initially, those concerns went nowhere.

Only after it became clear that FIFA and FEMA would not reimburse the city for officers working these assignments on regular duty did the plan change. Suddenly, thousands of FIFA assignments became overtime opportunities.

That was the right decision.

If officers are being asked to sacrifice family time, work different schedules, miss important events, and take on additional responsibilities to help the city host a global event, they deserve to be compensated fairly for that sacrifice.

The FIFA Fan Fest is not a public safety necessity. It is an optional event designed to drive commerce and economic activity. The city should not balance that business decision on the backs of police officers and firefighters.

At the same time, Dallas Police and Dallas Fire & Rescue are at the negotiating table working toward a new contract. We are fighting to retain experienced personnel while surrounding cities actively recruit them away. We are battling retirements, staffing shortages, and morale challenges every day.

And while all of this is happening, Dallas continues to receive warning signs that cannot be ignored.

AT&T moved its headquarters from downtown Dallas to Plano, leaving a massive vacancy in the heart of our city. Now we are watching another major professional sports franchise leave Dallas for the suburbs.

Yet despite these challenges, the residents of Dallas have spoken clearly about what they want for the future.

They voted to increase the number of police officers on the streets. They voted to strengthen the Police and Fire Pension System sooner rather than later. They voted to build a new Dallas Police Academy to replace the current 35-year-old “temporary” facility that has long restricted our ability to grow and train the next generation of officers.

The people of Dallas understand something that city leaders too often overlook: public safety is the foundation of a successful city.

Our officers are tired of being treated like an expense instead of an investment.

They are tired of being asked to do more with less.

They are tired of hearing there is no money for retention, recruitment, and public safety while being told to carry the responsibility of hosting world-class events and solving increasingly complex problems.

The future of Dallas depends on more than stadiums, entertainment districts, and international events.

It depends on whether this city can recruit and retain the police officers and firefighters who make all of those things possible.

Every decision made by city leadership sends a message. Right now, too many officers are hearing that message loud and clear.

If Dallas wants to compete with the suburbs, attract investment, retain businesses, host world-class events, and remain a destination city, it must start by taking care of the men and women who protect it every day.

That is not just good policy.

It is the right thing to do.
