Keep the Fun. Skip the Injuries! Travel Safely in Extreme Heat
Summer is the perfect time for road trips, vacations, and weekend adventures. Before you hit the road, take a few minutes to prepare for the heat. A little planning can help you avoid problems and keep everyone safe.
1. Make Sure the Air Conditioning Works
A working air conditioner can make a big difference on hot days. If it isn't keeping your vehicle cool, have it checked before your trip.
2. Fill the Gas Tank
Try not to let your gas tank get too low, especially if you're traveling through unfamiliar areas. Having plenty of fuel helps you stay prepared if traffic slows down or you need to take a different route.
3. Check Fluid Levels
Before leaving, check your engine oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, and other important fluids. Hot weather can put extra stress on your vehicle.
4. Fully Charge Your Devices
Charge your cell phone before you leave and bring a car charger or portable battery pack. A charged phone can help you get directions, receive weather alerts, or call for help if needed.
5. Pack Water and Snacks
Keep bottled water and a few healthy snacks in your vehicle. Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to protect yourself during hot weather, especially if you experience travel delays.
Before you head out, check the forecast, let someone know where you're going, and remember to look before you lock. Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
A little preparation can help make your summer travels safer, cooler, and more enjoyable.
