Centre for Integrated Research and Community Development Uganda (CIRCODU) is showcasing how small spaces and poor soils can be maximized to grow a variety of crops. Our office has replaced most decorative plants with edible crops. Using organic manure from kitchen waste generated from our office, we have amended the infertile soils to improve their physical and chemical properties to support plant growth. Any office or home can use internally generated organic waste to grow foods in available small spaces.

On this World Wetlands Day, let's celebrate all efforts towards restoring and preserving these vital ecosystems! Let’s reflect on the critical role wetlands play in our ecosystem and the urgent need to protect them.

The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Water and Environment and with the support from Green Climate Fund and UNDP, is implementing an 8-year project, Building Resilient Communities, Wetland Ecosystems and Associated Catchments in Uganda, which is aimed at restoring wetlands, rehabilitating catchments, and empowering communities with sustainable land management practices and reforestation, resilient agricultural practices and alternative livelihoods. This project is being implemented in 24 districts of Eastern and South-Western Uganda! The project has so far restored 38,941 hectares of wetlands and also rehabilitated 6,655 hectares of degraded catchment among other achievements.

Centre for Integrated Research and Community Development Uganda (CIRCODU), alongside Technology Consults (TECO), is proud to have contributed to the above efforts, through undertaking a detailed design of small-scale water storage and detention facilities, detailed plan for silt traps drainage, flood control and maximum water recuperation for the restoration of wetlands under the project.

Let's honour the dedication of local leaders, stakeholders, and communities working tirelessly to protect our wetlands. Together, we can ensure these invaluable ecosystems thrive for generations to come! Let's all support wetland conservation for a healthier planet and thriving community! This resonates well with this year's theme, "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing".
