Environmental and human rights concerns are taking a great toll on the realization of funding for the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). The prospective European lenders are walking away from requests to finance the $3.5 billion project, leaving it in financing blues barely three weeks after its launch. Last week, French newspaper Les Echos reported that three French banks – BNP Paribas, Société Générale and Crédit Agricole – which have previously bankrolled Total’s oil and gas projects – had opted not to provide financing for EACOP. Total and Uganda National Oil Company Limited Petroleum Authority of Uganda National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Uganda should go back to the drawing board and address the environmental and human rights concerns that have been raised on EACOP.
