The Day of the African Child, commemorated annually on June 16th, honors the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa where students protested against the inferior quality of education and demanded to be taught in their own language. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of investing in children's education and protecting their rights.

Key aspects of the Day of the African Child:

Commemoration:

It remembers the students killed in Soweto and acknowledges the bravery of those who fought for their rights.

Focus on Education:

It highlights the need for quality, inclusive, and equitable education for all African children.

Call for Action:

It urges governments, organizations, and individuals to prioritize children's rights and address barriers to their education and well-being.

Theme:

Each year, the African Union selects a theme to guide discussions and initiatives related to the day. For 2024, the theme was “Education as a Fundamental Right,” according to the African Union. For 2025, the theme is “Planning and Budgeting for Children's Rights: Progress since 2010”.

Advocacy:

It provides a platform to advocate for policies and programs that support children's education, health, and protection.

The Day of the African Child is a crucial event for promoting the well-being and future of African children

INTERNATIONAL ALBINISM AWARENESS DAY (I.A.A.D).
The International Albinism Awareness Day (I.A.A.D) festivities were launched on June 13, 2014, by then-UN expert for people with albinism (I.K ERO), and have since been observed yearly throughout the globe. It has been a space where PWAS have expressed their challenges, brainstormed possible solutions, and celebrated their victories, and it is clear that there has been a positive impact on society in terms of the protection of rights and freedoms for people with albinism, starting from the grassroots and progressing to the national and international levels.
