On this drive, the lions were stretched up in a tree like they had nowhere else to be. Then the leopard showed up doing almost the same, which even for me was a bit of a surprise.

Budongo is one of Uganda’s quieter chimp experiences, and that is part of what makes it so good.

Most people think of Kibale first. Fewer know what Budongo can hold.

On this trek, our guests found themselves in the middle of a hunt as the chimp troop brought down a colobus and fed on it. It was raw, fast, and completely unscripted — the kind of moment that leaves people excited, surprised, and seeing the forest a little differently.

We went into the forest with only the rangers and the quiet around us.

Having that private time with the gorillas in Bwindi felt like a real privilege. And then came a moment I do not think I will ever forget — a female walked up to me and placed her hand on my shoulder.

It lasted only a second, but it felt full of something gentle and sure, like a small reassurance I did not know I needed.

I will carru that touch with me forever.
