Malian rebels carried out a coordinated series of attacks on positions held by the junta’s armed forces and Russia’s Africa Corps across the country.

A Russian Mi-24 attack helicopter operated by the Africa Corps was shot down, killing its entire crew. The rebels also captured military equipment belonging to both the junta and Russian forces.

The attacks took place on July 4 and spanned a large part of Mali, including areas east of the country’s capital, Bamako.

After losing its foothold in Syria, Russia is now also losing ground in Mali.
