Pidhirtsi Castle β’ Ukrainian Versailles
β
Pidhirtsi Castle is located in the village of Pidhirtsi (Lviv Oblast) and is an outstanding architectural monument of Ukraine. A nice example of a combination of palace architecture and bastion fortifications. It consists of a three-story palace, church, inn and park.
The history of Pidhirtsi Castle dates back to the 16th century. However, at that time it was only a defensive fortification belonging to the Pidhoretsky family. The very name of the first owners gave the castle its name.
In 1633, Crown Hetman Koniecpolski bought the fortress and began its construction. French architect Guillaume de Beauplan designed new fortifications, and Italian engineer Andrea del Aqua designed a new palace and pavilion.
Within its walls in different years, this palace met kings, emperors and other nobility. Even the French writer Honore de Balzac stopped in Pidhirtsi. And the parks of Pidhirtsi Castle were once so beautiful that they became a model for Versailles and the park in Peterhof.
Pidhirtsi Castle was the king's residence, alchemical laboratory and even a tuberculosis dispensary. Throughout history, the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. But each time, it was reborn even more beautiful.
However, not only interesting history and amazing architecture attracts tourists. Pidhirtsi Castle has its own mystical secret. There are eyewitnesses who saw a ghost in the castle. The ghost was named the White Lady. According to legend, one of the owners of the castle out of jealousy killed his young wife and buried her body in the castle walls. Now, the White Lady wanders the corridors and begs for a Christian burial.
The mysticism around Pidhirtsi Castle attracts psychics, ghost hunters and other paranormal hunters. Some even managed to photograph the White Lady. If you also want to plunge into a mystical adventure and tickle your nerves - welcome to Pidhirtsi Castle.
