⛏️ Olduvai Gorge in Northern Tanzania is a site that holds the earliest evidence of mankind's evolution.

⛏️ Paleoanthropologists have found hundreds of fossilized bones and stone tools in the area dating back millions of years, leading them to conclude that humans evolved in Africa.
⠀
⛏️ Olduvai is derived from Maasai word Oldupai (a wild sisal plant that grows in the area).
⠀
⛏️ The gorge is located in the Great Rift Valley, in Ngorongoro Conservation Area between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park.

⛏️ The deposits have yielded the fossil remains of more than 60 hominins (members of the human lineage walking on two feet and using tools were found), providing the most continuous known record of human evolution during the past 2 million years, as well as the longest known archaeological record of the development of stone-tool industries.

⛏️ The remains of two species of human ancestors were found in Olduvai Gorge:

💀 Homo habilis, with a brain half the size of modern man, long-armed, with more apelike features, a sagittal crest, but a rounded cranial brain and a robust jaw, known as “Handy man” who was there until 1.75 million years ago and was thought to use simple tools.

💀 Homo erectus or upright man, with increased body size and brain size, with relatively elongated legs and shorter arms in comparison to its torso. Homo erectus made hand axes and occupied the site from 1.75 million years ago until Homo sapiens appeared 195,000 years ago.

⛏️ Olduvai Gorge was designated part of a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
