Charities address social and economic challenges, while businesses maximize profit. That is how it’s been for the last century, that is until the 1960s when the first social enterprises formed as a marriage of the two. Today, these mission-driven organizations tackle environmental, health, economic, social, and other issues: think Patagonia, TOMS shoes, Warby Parker, Grameen Foundation, and Etsy, for example.

Ten years ago, we founded Simusolar as a social enterprise with the goal of enabling smallholder farmers and rural businesses to prosper using solar, productivity-enhancing equipment. Since then, over 100,000 people have benefited.
