According to research by the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations and the journal
《Science》, approximately 640,000 to 800,000 tons
of shing nets and shing gear are abandoned
or lost in the ocean every year, of which Nylon 6
shing nets account for approximately 60% - 70%
(i.e. 380,000 to 560,000 tons) .
A group of citizen scientists visited Taiwan's coast
to document the composition of marine debris.
It was found that up to 70% of marine debris
was abandoned shing gear, and in Penghu and
Changhua, Yunlin and Chiayi regions, the combined
proportion of abandoned aquaculture and shing
gear exceeded 85%.
