Help us save Lion House!.
Friends of Mr Biswas began as Friends of Mr. Biswas and was responsible for persuading the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) to purchase the house on Nepaul Street, St James which matches exactly the house in A House for Mr Biswas.
The Government Minister who first responded to Friends’ plea was Senator Daphne Phillips. Friends of Mr Biswas was given a 99 year lease to maintain the building and develop it as a Naipaul Museum and an active House of Literature encouraging literary writing and the reading of literature in Trinidad and Tobago today.
Early in our operations we tried hard to bring about a pairing of “The house for Mr. Biswas" in St James with with the Lion House in Chaguanas and all we can do now is focus on getting something done to save the Lion House and restore it to the beautiful structure it used to be.
After funding the renovation of the building on Nepaul Street, Government has not provided financial support except on application for one-off events. Friends is now an NGO doing the work on a voluntary basis and subsisting on contributions made by Corporate citizens and individuals.
The NGO invites contributions and offers of day to day assistance from citizens of Trinidad and Tobago
This picture is an ole one - it is in deplorable conditions today!
