BREAKING- MAJOR 7.3 EARTHQUAKE STRIKES OFF MEXICO'S SOUTHERN COAST

A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Chiapas, southern Mexico, on Friday, sending strong tremors across Guatemala and El Salvador and prompting a tsunami warning for nearby coastlines.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 15.2 km (9.4 miles). The agency later revised its initial estimate from magnitude 7.4 to 7.3.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System warned that hazardous tsunami waves of 0.3 to 1.0 metre above normal tide levels were possible along parts of the Mexican and Guatemalan coastlines within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicenter.

Mexico's Secretary of the Navy, Raymundo Morales, said significant coastal flooding is not expected, but advised residents and visitors to stay away from beaches as a precaution.

"There is no serious maritime impact expected. However, some beaches could experience a rise in sea level of up to half a metre due to the tsunami effect," Morales said.

Several strong aftershocks, including earthquakes ranging between magnitude 5.0 and 6.0, were also reported across Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

Residents Rush Outdoors

The quake caused buildings to sway in Guatemala City, forcing many residents to evacuate homes and offices.

Local media showed government buildings being evacuated as emergency protocols were activated.

Residents described the shaking as strong and prolonged, with many fleeing into the streets for safety.

No Immediate Reports of Major Damage

As of this report, authorities have not reported any significant damage or casualties, although emergency officials continue to assess affected areas.

8:45AM - The Tropical Atlantic has been void of Tropical Wave activity over the last couple days resulting in drier weather this week across much of the region despite isolated showers.

Last evening, the twenty-seventh Tropical Wave of the season , based on NHC's count, has left West Africa. The Tropical Wave has significant shower and thunderstorm activity associated with it at this time.

However, this system is not expecteed to affect the Lesser Antilles until the middle to latter part of next week, Wed 22nd/Thurs 23rd July, 2026.
