Tonga Police

Former Tonga Police Commissioner Shane McLennan and his wife, Sharron McLennan, presented the Royal Tonga Police Band Member of the Year Award to Sergeant Vaiafulele Fungalei, recognising his outstanding dedication, professionalism, leadership, and contribution to the Royal Tonga Police Band.

Established by Shane and Sharron McLennan, the perpetual award recognises excellence within the Royal Tonga Police Band and aims to inspire future generations of police musicians. Each annual recipient receives an individual award and a cash prize, personally donated by the McLennans.

During the presentation, Mr McLennan reflected on his enduring connection with Tonga, describing his return as "coming home." He also highlighted his longstanding support for police bands and the progress made during his tenure as Tonga Police Commissioner, including strengthening the Royal Tonga Police Band through recruitment, improved resources, greater opportunities for women, and increased regional recognition.

He also acknowledged the band's success at the inaugural Pacific Police Tattoo, where it was recognised as the premier police band in the Pacific.

Commissioner Geoff Turner thanked Shane and Sharron McLennan for establishing the perpetual award and for their continued support of the Royal Tonga Police Band. He also recognised the band's significant contribution to community engagement, youth development, and its role in proudly representing Tonga across the Pacific.

The Band Member of the Year Award is assessed against six key criteria: musicianship and performance, teamwork, commitment and reliability, leadership and initiative, personal growth and development, and representation and ambassadorship.

Tonga Police congratulate Sergeant Vaiafulele Fungalei on this well-deserved recognition and expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr and Mrs McLennan for their ongoing support and lasting contribution to the continued excellence of the Royal Tonga Police Band.
