Whale Encounters

Yesterday was cloudy and the water was dark blue. There was no movement on the surface. Suddenly, a disturbance on the surface followed by a loud blow and a high cloud signaled the presence of the Blue whale.
We slid into the water and swam towards it. The animal took his last breath and disappeared below the surface. I dive and wait. The whale passes me and I am amazed by the size of it… and then it fades into the ocean and all is still.

The blue whale’s heart is huge. It’s the largest heart in the animal kingdom, weighing about 180 kilograms—about the same weight as a gorilla and roughly the size of a bumper car. As a blue whale dives to feed, its giant heart may only beat twice per minute.
