The World Food Programme extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of H.E. Dr. Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo, former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, who passed away on 21 June 2026. Mr. Guterres Lú-Olo was a dedicated Timorese leader and a steadfast partner of the United Nations. Throughout his years of service, he showed a deep commitment to improving the lives of the Timorese people, especially the most vulnerable. He was a strong advocate for food and nutrition security, poverty reduction, and sustainable development, and at the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit he called for unity and collective action to build a better future for all.

We also express our sympathies to the people and Government of Timor-Leste during this time of mourning.

May his legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to the well-being of his people be remembered for generations to come.

Ho finansiamentu husi kontribuisaun Japaun nian hamutuk USD 700.000, foos ne’e sei suporta eskola liu 350 iha Covalima, Aileu, Lautém no Dili, fó enerjia ba labarik sira atu aprende, halimar no dezenvolve ho di’ak.

On June 12th, the Government of Japan and WFP delivered rice to the Government of Timor-Leste to support the national school feeding programme, helping ensure that more than 100,000 schoolchildren across the country have access to nutritious meals at school.

Funded through Japan’s contribution of USD 700,000, the rice will support over 350 schools in Covalima, Aileu, Lautém, and Dili, giving children the energy they need to learn, play, and thrive.

More than a food contribution, this partnership demonstrates how collective action can support children’s wellbeing and create positive ripple effects for families and communities across Timor-Leste. 🇹🇱

In Timor-Leste, something as simple as a school meal is transforming a child’s future.

For many children, that warm plate of food is more than nourishment, it is hope, energy, and a reason to stay in school.

With the support of the People of the Republic of Korea, in partnership with the Government of Timor-Leste, and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP), the KOICA funded “Say No to 5S” initiative is helping turn that hope into reality in Baucau. Schools are not only providing healthier meals, but also creating safer, more dignified spaces where children can learn and thrive.

This week, H.E. Mr. CHANG Ha Yeon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Timor-Leste, visited local schools to witness these changes firsthand. At EBC 1,2,3 Vilanova, the impact was visible, in the smiles of students receiving hot meals, in the care taken in newly improved kitchens, and in the renewed sense of possibility filling the classrooms.

Because when a child is no longer hungry, everything changes. They can concentrate. They can participate. They can dream.

This initiative is not just about food, it is about restoring opportunity, one meal at a time, and giving every child the chance to build a brighter future.

And this is only the beginning. With a second phase on the way, even more children will soon benefit, bringing us one step closer to a Timor-Leste where no child has to learn on an empty stomach.
