คุณรู้จักจุลินทรีย์มากน้อยเพียงใด จุลินทรีย์ส่วนใหญ่คือสิ่งมีชีวิตที่มองไม่เห็นด้วยตาเปล่า หรือจะเรียกว่าเป็นพวก ก็ได้ แต่จุลินทรีย์เป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีความหลากหลายสูงสุดในโลกที่เราอาศัยอยู่ โดยจุลินทรีย์อาศัยอยู่ในทุกหนแห่ง ดิน นำ้ อากาศ แม้กระทั่งในร่างกายของเรา สัตว์หรือในต้นพืชต่างๆ จุลินทรีย์จึงเป็นเสมือนผู้ควบคุมการเปลี่ยนแปลงของโลกนี้รวมไปถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาวะภูมิอากาศของโลก (Climate Change) แต่ในทางกลับกันเมื่อสภาวะภูมิอากาศเปลี่ยน จุลินทรีย์ก็ได้รับผลกระทบเช่นกัน นักวิทยาศาตร์ชั้นนำของโลกกว่า 30 รายจึงรวมตัวแสดงฉันทามติผ่านบทความตีพิมพ์ใน Nature Reviews Microbiology volume 17, (2019) |เรียกร้องให้ทุกคน หันมาให้ความสำคัญกับงานวิจัยจุลินทรีย์ โดยเฉพาะนักการเมือง ผู้บริหารและผู้มีหน้าที่กำหนดนโยบายแก้ปัญหา ต้องส่งเสริมการศึกษาวิจัยผลกระทบต่อชุมชนจุลินทรีย์ในระบบนิเวศน์ต่างๆ ที่เกิดจาก Climate Change เพื่อจะได้นำข้อมูลและองค์ความรู้มาประกอบการตัดสินใจในนโยบายต่างๆ

We Live in the Microbial World!

More than 30 microbiologists from 9 countries have recently issued the consensus statement a warning to humanity: Microbiology and Climate change (published in Nature Reviews Microbiology volume 17, pages569–586 (2019) )-- they are calling for the world to stop ignoring the role of microorganisms, the majority in Earth's biodiversity and ecosystem when addressing climate change.

The microbial world is “the life support system of the biosphere,” the authors write in the statement. All other organisms rely on the microorganisms. The microbial communities are core elements in regulating almost all biogeochemical cycles, including carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling across various biomes. However, microorganisms are also affected by the climate changes, therefore creating a snowball effect across both marine and terrestrial biomes as well as impacting society directly through agriculture and infectious diseases.

The key point in this statement is to emphasize the need to investigate microbial responses to climate change and to include microbe-based research during the development of policy and management decisions.
