A 2018 Tesla Model S 75D with 930,000 km on the odometer has just had its rear brake pads replaced for the first time after 478,000 miles of use. The front pads were swapped at 285,000 miles which is already remarkable, and the current set of fronts has now done another 292,000 miles and counting. For comparison most gas cars need brake pads every 25,000 to 50,000 miles, meaning this Tesla's rear brakes outlasted a typical gas car's by roughly 10x. The owner uses the car for limousine driving where regenerative braking is perfectly suited to the smooth stop-and-start style of chauffeuring passengers. Every time the driver lifts off the accelerator the motor reverses into a generator slowing the car while feeding energy back into the battery, so the physical brakes are barely needed during normal driving. The car now runs a 90 kWh pack which adds a little extra weight to slow down, but even with the heavier battery the brakes lasted nearly half a million miles. When people calculate EV savings they focus on fuel and oil changes but brake longevity is one of the biggest hidden advantages of electric ownership.
