After 44 years of shaping pop culture, MTV signed off the only way that made sense by playing the very first video it ever aired.

“Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles debuted MTV back in August 1, 1981… and became its final broadcast on December 31, 2025.

Released in 1979, the synth-pop classic written by Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, and Bruce Woolley topped charts in 16 countries and proved eerily prophetic about technology changing how we consume music.

From videos killing the radio star to becoming history itself MTV didn’t just sign off. It closed the loop. GenX is feeling a little sad today but glad they went out how they came in with an iconic song that will never be forgotten.
