สมัยวัยรุ่น ผมเคยคิดว่า AMG ก็เป็นแค่รถ Mercedes-Benz ที่เอามาทำให้แรงขึ้น
ใส่ body kit
ใส่ท่อดัง
เพิ่มแรงม้า
แค่นั้น
แต่พอเริ่มอ่านเรื่องราวของ AMG จริง ๆ ถึงได้รู้ว่าความจริงมันไม่ใช่แบบนั้น
AMG ไม่ได้เริ่มจากโรงงานใหญ่โตของ Mercedes-Benz
แต่มันเริ่มจากวิศวกร 2 คน ที่เอาเครื่อง Mercedes มานั่งโมดิฟายกันเองในโรงรถ
Hans Werner Aufrecht และ Erhard Melcher
ชื่อ AMG เอง ก็มาจากชื่อของทั้งคู่ รวมกับเมือง Grossaspach บ้านเกิดของ Aufrecht
A = Aufrecht
M = Melcher
G = Grossaspach
แต่สิ่งที่ทำให้คนเริ่มรู้จัก AMG จริง ๆ ไม่ใช่รถสปอร์ตเตี้ย ๆ แต่เป็น “รถซีดานแดงคันใหญ่”
1971 AMG 300 SEL 6.8 หรือที่คนเรียกว่า “Red Pig”
รถคันนี้ทั้งหนัก ใหญ่ และดูไม่เหมาะกับสนามแข่งเลย
แต่ดันเอาไปลงแข่ง Spa 24 Hours แล้วได้อันดับ 2 overall
ลองนึกภาพเหมือนเอานักเลงใส่สูทตัวใหญ่ ๆ ไปต่อยกับนักมวยอาชีพ แล้วดันชนะไปหลายคน
นั่นคือ moment ที่ AMG เริ่มกลายเป็นตำนาน
มันไม่ใช่รถที่พยายามจะดูเรียบร้อยที่สุด หรือขับง่ายที่สุดเสมอไป
แต่หลายครั้ง มันกลับเป็นรถที่ทำให้คนขับ “รู้สึกอะไรบางอย่าง” มากกว่า
ล่าสุดมีโอกาสได้ขับ CLA45 S
แล้วมันยิ่งทำให้ผมเข้าใจ character ของ AMG มากขึ้น
เพราะสิ่งที่น่าประทับใจจริง ๆ ไม่ใช่แค่ตัวเลข 421 แรงม้า
แต่เป็น feeling ตอนขับ
ทั้ง response ของคันเร่ง
น้ำหนักพวงมาลัย
จังหวะเปลี่ยนเกียร์
รวมถึงความรู้สึกที่รถตอบสนองกลับมาหาคนขับตลอดเวลา
มันเป็นรถที่ขับแล้วรู้สึก active ตลอด
แบบที่พอผ่านไปอีกวัน
ยังรู้สึกอยากกลับไปขับมันอีกครั้ง

และผมว่าตรงนั้นแหละ คือเหตุผลที่หลายคนผูกพันกับ AMG มาจนถึงวันนี้

แล้วคุณล่ะ
เคยมี AMG คันไหนที่ขับแล้วรู้สึก “ติดอยู่ในหัว” หลังจากลงจากรถบ้างไหม?

Back when I was younger,
I used to think AMG was just a Mercedes-Benz made faster.

Add a body kit.
A louder exhaust.
More horsepower.

That’s it.

But the more I started reading about AMG,
the more I realized it was never that simple.


AMG didn’t begin as a massive division inside Mercedes-Benz.

It started with two engineers
modifying Mercedes engines in a small garage.

Hans Werner Aufrecht
and Erhard Melcher.

Even the name “AMG”
came from their initials
plus Aufrecht’s hometown, Grossaspach.

A = Aufrecht
M = Melcher
G = Grossaspach


And interestingly,
the car that first made people notice AMG
wasn’t a low-slung sports car.

It was a big red sedan.

The 1971 AMG 300 SEL 6.8,
better known as the “Red Pig.”

The car was heavy, large,
and looked completely out of place on a racetrack.

Yet somehow,
it went to Spa 24 Hours
and finished 2nd overall.

Imagine a huge guy in a tailored suit
walking into a professional boxing match
and somehow beating half the field.

That was the moment AMG started becoming a legend.


AMG cars were never necessarily
the smoothest
or the most refined to drive.

But many of them had something else.

They made the driver feel something.


Recently, I had the chance to drive the CLA45 S again.

And honestly,
it made me understand AMG’s character even more.

What impressed me most
wasn’t just the 421 horsepower.

It was the feeling behind the wheel.

The throttle response.
The steering weight.
The way the gearbox reacted.
And how connected the car constantly felt to the driver.

It’s the kind of car
that keeps you mentally engaged the entire time you drive it.

The kind where even the next day,
you still feel like going back for another drive.


And I think that’s exactly why
so many people stay emotionally attached to AMG.
