It was our pleasure to co-host the Macaulay Library / eBird / Merlin Sound Recording Workshop at the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station from May 7–10, 2026. Shout out to the team leads from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, our co-hosts from the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand (BCST), and the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station for their support and facilities throughout the training program! We had a great time with all the wonderful participants who made this workshop such an enjoyable and productive experience. Throughout the workshop, we got hands-on experience using shotgun and parabolic microphones, learned how to process and upload our audio to the Macaulay Library database, and successfully contributed numerous high-quality recordings of relatively restricted-range taxa, such as the iconic Siamese Fireback, 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 Scaly-crowned Babbler, and 𝘥𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘪 Brown Prinia. These contributions are valuable reference material for the continued development of the Merlin Bird ID app and support bird monitoring. We can’t wait to see how this data benefits more research in the future!

New excitement unlocked! Our Small Carnivore team has some incredible footage to share from the field! The Hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana) is listed as Endangered by IUCN and is considered one of the rarest otter species in the world. In fact, it was believed to be entirely extinct until small populations were rediscovered in the late '90s. In Thailand, their survival is severely threatened by habitat loss from land encroachment and devastating forest fires. Human presence and domestic dogs also pose potential risks, as these otters have a much lower tolerance for human-induced disturbance than their close relatives, the Smooth-coated otter and the Asian small-clawed otter.
The CEG Small Carnivore team is working hard to collect data for the population monitoring of Hairy-nosed otter in southern Thailand, surveys led by Anucha Kamjing.
