Successfully concluded the second phase of the Business Development Plan training of the 50 micro-entrepreneurs in Juba County. They were equipped with skills to strengthen their business profiles, define clear objectives, and prepare proposals to compete for available micro-grant opportunities across the country. On Monday 6/01/26, we were honored with a courtesy visit by partner representatives (Research) Team from Danish Refugee Council (DRC) to our Office in Juba, South Sudan. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange information on programs the two organizations are into, and the areas of common interests. We look forward to collaboration in the future Danish Refugee Council

Let's Talk Migration Series: Who is a refugee?

A refugee is considered a person who has been forced to flee their home country due to war and violence, and has a fear of danger and cannot safely return home due to persecution in the South Sudan case. Many of its citizens remain refugees in Uganda, gaining prima facie status. Uganda has long been recognised for maintaining one of the most progressive refugee protection regimes globally, built on an open-door asylum approach. Central to this model has been the use of Group Status (prima facie) refugee recognition. This mechanism allows people fleeing mass violence or conflict to be granted refugee status as a group.

However, in March this year, Uganda announced that it had revoked group status recognition of refugees, opting for individual status determination. This move will likely create protection backlogs, increase undocumented movements, and delay access to essential services such as shelter, food assistance, healthcare, education, and legal documentation.

As a result of the above backdrop, we held a one-day public policy dialogue to assess the Implications of Uganda’s Shift from Group Status Refugee Recognition. At the centre of the discussion was the policy's legal and humanitarian consequences for migrants and refugees. Many of the participants highlighted that South Sudan and D.R Congo, among other East African countries, remain affected by active conflict and governance challenges amidst an increasing climate-induced migration, making group movements inevitable. Therefore, the stakeholders called for regional solidarity, urging the Ugandan Government to apply its new policy leniency, taking into account the situation of refugees from South Sudan and the D.R. Congo. This policy dialogue at the Radson Blu Hotel Juba was attended by over 80 stakeholders drawn from CSOs, Government officials, and academia.

South Sudan has continued to experience mass migration both within and outside the country since the beginning of 2026. Between January and March 2026, the country suffered a fresh wave of increased military confrontation between the South Sudan Defence Forces (SSDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition-SPLA-IO, especially in Jonglei, Upper Nile, and Lake States, amounting to at least 280,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), according to reports from Relief Web and IOM. Therefore, on 4/23/26, under our "Let's Talk Migration Project", we held an Expert Roundtable Discussion on the Impact of Renewed Migration Crisis Amidst Reduced funding in South Sudan. The purpose of the event is to analyse the impact of the renewed in-country crisis on the political, economic, and social aspects of migration and election preparations amidst reduced funding, and also to assess the current coordination mechanisms and response among migration agencies on internal displacements, and to inform partner programming on migration amidst the changing funding, political, and security landscape in South Sudan. This activity was conducted in partnership with our partner Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, in collaboration with the National Ministry of Interior's Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passports, and Immigration (DCRNPI).
