Dr. Riek Machar and Seven SPLM-IO Members Charged with Serious Crimes

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs has released the finding on the investigation of Nasir and formally charged SPLM–IO leader, Dr. Riek Machar, along with seven members of his party.

The charges, based on both South Sudanese and international law, include the following:

Murder of Maj. Gen. David Majur Dak and approximately 250 soldiers in Nasir.

Conspiracy and common intention in coordination with the White Army

Terrorism and financing of terrorist acts.

Destruction of public property and military assets.

Crimes against humanity.

Treason and acts against state authority.

Dr. Machar and the accused individuals have been officially notified of the charges, as well as their constitutional rights, including the right to a fair trial and legal representation of their choice.

RUMYU elects New Leader

Rumbek Youth Union (RUMYU) held elections to elect a new Chairperson after the term of the former chairman ended last year.The elections are held as a sign of democracy and freedom of political expression by the youth of Rumbek.

Mr. Charles Benykok Matuol emerged as the new Chairperson after a tough race with his two competitors Mr.John Thon Pam and John Maniel Majok while Samuel Deng Mayek stood as unopposed secretary general and scooped 95% votes wining the position. Ambassador Malek Ruben Riak honored the occasion and expresses his joy for the democratic exercise conducted by Rumbek youth by electing their leaders for the union in a peaceful and democratic manner.

He further added that it is the spirit of democracy that the youth have shown by both the losing and winning parties calling upon the youth to continue practicing the same democracy and maturity that they have showcased to everyone.

" Voting for one another and accepting the outcome of the results showed the true spirit of democracy."

" For the new leadership elect, you are given a mandate of all the constituencies of all Agar community", It is not a simple task, this is a very heavy task and it needs you to humble yourself and at your back yard there are small issues which need you to intervene, and that you will need members of your county to join peace like other Agar communities " He added.
He congratulates all the candidates for accepting the results.

" Let us embrace peace with the existing responsibilities and don't work in isolation. But , you work in collaboration with the State government and this will lead to your success and other NGOs alongside".

The chairperson of independent elections committee of Rumbek youth union ( RUMYU) in Rumbek main office Mr. Kuol Mathubier Kucdhal, said they concluded the election process which started on the 15th April 2025, the election of RUMYU are done through delegations.

" RUMYU is comprised of 3 counties of Agar sub-clan of Dinka and that they are Rumbek East, Rumbek central and Rumbek North", he said. " According to RUMYU constitution, each county is to delegate 15 persons to the Rumbek youth union (RUMYU) who are youths and who are between age of 18 and 45".

He said these 45 delegates casted their votes today for the 3 candidates who were contesting for chairmanship of RUMYU and the 3 candidates for chairmanship are Charles Benykok, John Maniel Majok, and the other John Thon Pam.
" Out of 45 candidates; 24 candidates voted for Charles Benykok Matuol, which resulted to 53 % of the total required votes, and 4 other delegates voted for John Maniel Majok and 17 delegates voted for John Thon Pam, making a second leading candidate with 37% ".

He said since the electrol process began ,it had been peaceful and successful till its conclusion.
He said I declared Charles Benykok Matuol as the winner and chairperson elect of RUMYU chairmanship in Rumbek main office adding that the other position which was contested for is the position of the RUMYU secretary general whichl was unopposed and the electoral committee declared Mr.Deng Mayek as a secretary general of RUMYU.

" He is unopposed that mean, nobody was competing with him", he said. " Out of 45 candidates, 44 voted for him, and only 1 person abstain from voting. This mean, the candidate who was running unpossessed got 98% of the total required votes for the secretary general and was declared, secretary general elect".
" According to RUMYU constitution, the swearing of the elected officials is to be done after 1 week after the general elections which has just been concluded today ,And 27 members out of 45 will elect the speaker and the deputy speaker and when this process is done from next week definitely we will start the process of the swearing in."

Kuol said during the election process,there were election observers and also agents because sent by candidate to over see the process of elections which was free,fair and transparent.
