*Peace Education and the Role of Universities in Sustainable Peacebuilding*
Amb. Sylvestre Sidie Mohamed Kallon - Human Rights Expert and Peace Practitioner.

Peace education remains essential for sustaining long-term peace in Sierra Leone. Universities have a unique responsibility to cultivate critical thinking democratic values and conflict resolution skills among young people. By strengthening curriculum development, research, and community engagement, universities can significantly contribute to building a peaceful and resilient society.

Sustained investment in higher education and peace education initiatives will help ensure that future generations possess the knowledge and values necessary to prevent conflicts and promote national unity.

Universities should support peace clubs, debate forums, and community service programmes that encourage youth participation in peacebuilding.

Additionally, investment in research centers focused on peace and conflict studies can enhance knowledge production.

The good news is that the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone, has introduced a Peace Security and Development unit in the Social Work Department to prepare students for sustainable peacebuilding drives.

Moreover, Universities should collaborate with government agencies including the Peace Commission, civil society organizations, and development partners, to strengthen peacebuilding initiatives.
