The essence of much of Slavic Easter festivities stretches to the times long before the arrival of Christianity and directly into the pagan celebrations of the spring and vernal equinox. As we know, when Christianity arrived, many of these customs were altered, given a different meaning and absorbed into the faith.
The iconic Easter egg is perhaps the most powerful remnant of our age-old pagan memory. The egg is the emblem of new life, a symbol of fertility and fresh beginnings. The coveted ‘egg’ has been present in pagan rituals, geared towards safeguarding fertility, since time immemorial across world cultures. Archeological evidence even testifies to the fact that our predecessors painted these ceremonial eggs in a variety of designs and colors.
Red, the color of blood, life and passion was most popular. Other times, protective symbols were drawn on the eggs. It's beautiful to witness how these customs have survived until today and continue to be a a key element of Easter festivities, not just in the Slavic world...
