moving a load you can only manage 1-6 reps will cause total neurorecruitment of ALL a muscle's fibers - this will stimulate muscle cell generation, giving dense/thick muscle which will not 'disappear' during periods of non-training. Eat a good amount of food, spreading your protein throughout the day, and include lots of healthy fats - lipoproteins - which will be needed to build the structure of the new muscle cells. Tons of rest - we grow ONLY when we rest. This is basically what you said, just supporting your points.
