**Julia’s Letter to Don Juan**
*(Canto I, Stanzas 193–198)*

They say thou art to leave me—to leave me?
But this is not so; it cannot be so;
Yet if it were—if word and oath must flee me,
Still would I cling to thee, still love thee—though
The world should mock this weakness—though it shame me,
And I must blush to hear thy name…
I have no further joy in this false world,
For what was pleasure is now torture now:
The flowers are odorless, the wine is sour’d,
The bright moon darkens in her midnight hour,
And all that once was sweet is bitter made,
And all my heart is fill’d with thee—and dread.

They tell me thou must go—’tis fate’s decree,
And yet I live—and yet I hold out breath
And yet I write to thee—and what is writ
Will be a secret till we meet in death.
But if—as legends say—the dead can see
The parting look of those they loved on earth
Then turn to me, Juan, ere we lose the sun,
And take the last gaze of my love and woe!
Man’s love is of man’s life a thing apart,
It is woman’s whole existence; love is spun
From her own heart, and the frail web undone
She dies—or lives, but withers from the sun.

I loved thee, Juan—O! I loved thee dearly
Not wisely, but too well—and ne’er can cease
Yet now the dream is past—the truth too near

القمر المشرق يظلم في منتصف الليل،
وكل ما كان حلوًا صار مرًا،
وقلبي ممتلئ بك — وبالرعب."

سيبقى سرًا حتى نلتقي في الموت.
