Nhial Deng Nhial has long been one of the most prominent figures in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and in the Government of South Sudan after independence.
He hails from Tonj, Warrap State, and is the son of the late William Deng Nhial, a distinguished political leader assassinated by the Sudanese army in 1968.

Born in 1952, Nhial began his education in Tonj before graduating from Comboni College, Khartoum (1975).
He earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Khartoum (1980) and later obtained a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Dundee, UK (2008).

Fluent in both English and Arabic, Nhial briefly worked with the Sudanese government before joining the SPLM in 1983.
Though trained militarily, his focus was mainly administrative and diplomatic, not combat leadership.

🔹 Early Political Contributions:

Coordinated peace initiatives and unofficial dialogues with Khartoum in 1989.

Oversaw civil administration in Bahr el Ghazal after the SPLM’s Chukudum Convention (1990s).
