Our Fourth Domain and practically the father of all our domains:
The Teaching and Learning Domain
♦️General Objective:
To explore students and teachers’ perspectives on teaching and learning approaches in Khartoum University- Faculty of medicine.
♦️This research project is meant to analyze students perspectives of both face to face and E-learning
💬Qualitative data has been collected from the students using focus group discussions of students from all academic years.
📌Findings📌
After studying our findings, we can affirm that students learn best when they participate actively and interactively in learning during face to face and online lectures, whilst critically analyzing the information with the teacher before self-studying.
It has been observed that environmental and logistical inadequacies in labs can affect the learning potential in students, and can affect active learning by limiting the students’ capability in combining theory with practice.
Strong arguments in favor of and against the modern methods and techniques of learning (i.e online learning) has also been noted, many of the students argued that as much as e-learning has allowed for the accessibility of time and place, the reduced financial costs, and the personalization of the online system to suit a variety of learning styles, there is also the issue of being able to attend all online lectures for technical issues.
Recommendations 📝
Further data needs to be collected and analysed but so far ;
✏️Students recommend for their [ online ] experience:
📍 To be more clear and have a unified plan for the whole process for example to unify the educational platforms with detailed timetables.
📍Doctors prefer to be more aware and committed to their lectures’ timetables, care about the environment and backgrounds where they record their lectures.
📍Doctors have to be more flexible and keep in their minds we live in sudan and not all students have the same facilities, so the E-learning experience and the way materials are provided by must be suitable to all students
📍Open the space for the students to give continuous feedback about lectures and have a chance or a way to contact doctors if they have any questions about lectures .
📍Continue in and modify the online mentorship programs with the doctors .
📍 Improve the E-teaching skills by organizing programs and workshops for the doctors and teaching assistants like that’s done by Anatomy department
✏️For ( face to face ) teaching approaches, Students recommend to :
📍Continue & add more students based projects and initiatives like seminars and assignments to create an encouraging educational environment .
📍A detailed orientation and timetable with clear objectives for all the subjects to have a clear view about what's required from them for each course will be very beneficial .
📍Continuous programs or online courses for staff to improve their teaching and presentation skills and to keep up with updates, caring about skills and how the lectures are presented will make their education an enjoyable process.
📍Re-distribute the subjects of 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th and make the load equally distributed, and not make one semester with overload and other not.
📍 Re-distribute the courses of the community medicine and to get the research-related course ( like biostatistics, Analysis, SPSS skills ) in semester 6th/7th so it will be immediately before they start working in their researches
📍 Students also will be so grateful if the lectures, tutorials and Labs are evaluated regularly .
📍Continuous assessment for the teaching environment and furbishing the labs instruments and cadavers will be more than perfect.
