What comes to mind when you think about a refugee camp?
For many people, it's images of crisis and dependency. But spend time inside these communities and you quickly see something much bigger: entrepreneurs building businesses, employing others, serving customers, and creating opportunity every day.
The people in this video are cafe owners, creatives, retailers, and business operators working hard to support their families and their communities.
Economic inclusion is safety. When displacement-affected people can earn, trade, and build, they gain stability that aid alone cannot provide. Reframing how we see these communities is the first step: not as populations waiting for help, but as active local economies full of talent and market potential.
Across the region, entrepreneurs supported by Inkomoko have created more than 44,000 jobs. In Rwanda alone, more than 26,000 jobs have been created, with women and youth making up the majority.
These communities are not defined only by need.
More private sector players should be paying attention.

At the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali last week, leaders called for “shared ownership” to drive Africa’s future growth.
This theme raises a question: Who is actually included in Africa’s investment story?
In Rwanda’s Mahama Refugee Camp, entrepreneur Jean de Dieu offers a REframe.
With access to capital, training, and markets, he built a that engages both refugees and the host community, creating income, jobs, and local economic value.
His story challenges how we think about displacement-affected communities..
They are places of enterprise, resilience, and untapped market opportunity.
If Africa is serious about inclusive growth, displacement-affected markets cannot remain a humanitarian side conversation.
By the 2027 Africa CEO Forum, they should be part of the main agenda:

▪️ Unlocking entrepreneurship
▪️ and making shared ownership real
