Amadiya is a city that literally cannot grow. It stands on a flat mountaintop about 1,400 meters above sea level in the mountains of northern Iraq. Steep cliffs turned it into a natural fortress but left no room to expand. For centuries, people built closer and closer, creating a city that seems to float above the valleys and exist outside of time.
