In the late 70s, the talented manager Michael Miles of Heublein saved the restaurant chain. It was he who decided to return to the company's roots, carried out a large-scale renovation program of restaurants and again attracted Sanders to the chain's activities.

The Colonel now had an advisory role in the management of the restaurant chain and led an active advertising campaign. He performed this role until 1980, until his death from pneumonia.
