In 1971, a hacker named John Draper used a whistle from a box of Cap'n Crunch to break into the AT&T telephone network (phreaking) and make free long-distance calls.

A friend said that with a game whistle from a box of the above corn pops, a sound can be made whose frequency is determined by the signal of the long-distance telephone network. Then he came up with a way to make free calls: he called the long distance number and blew the whistle while it was dialing. Coinciding with the signal of the telephone network, the signal of the whistle was perceived as if Draper hung up. Restriction of freedom, and the telephone system does not fix the restriction of action.
