The Flight Mode Annunciator (FMA) is one of the most important elements on the PFD. If you are not cross-checking the FMA during every phase of flight, you are not truly monitoring the aircraft.

The FMA is divided into five columns, each displaying a specific category of autoflight information: from autothrust modes, to lateral and vertical guidance, to autopilot and flight director engagement status.

Understanding what each column indicates is fundamental for any pilot operating a modern airliner.

Thrust management on the Airbus A320 is not a matter of simply pushing the levers forward.

The autothrust system operates across several distinct modes: from TOGA or FLEX/MCT on departure, to CLIMB, CRUISE, and idle modes in the cruise and descent phases, each with specific logic that the aircraft manages automatically when engaged.

Understanding how autothrust interacts with the Flight Director and Autopilot, how the FMA reflects every mode transition, and when to expect a mode change is fundamental knowledge for any pilot stepping into an A320 cockpit.
