With a surface area of 238.391 square kilometers (92,043 sq. miles) Romania is the largest country in South Eastern Europe and has the 7th largest population of the EU with over 20.000.000 people while the capital and biggest city is Bucharest, the 6th largest city in EU.
In terms of tourism, there are over 4.500 travel agents (however only approx. 10% IATA accredited). The online business accounts only for 8% of tourism business due local habits hence over 80% of airline tickets are sold through travel agents (including low cost carriers).
There are 2 local GDSs Amadeus (60%) and Travelport (Worldspan 40%) that are disputing almost 3.000.000 air segments / year while low cost carriers (accounting for another approx. 4 million segments/year) are sold mostly directly to travel agents (resellers to large public who doesn’t have a credit card or it is reluctant to use own card details for online transactions) or individuals.
More of 70 % of the tourism activity it is done in Bucharest while outgoing accounts for about 90% of the business.
It is worth mentioning that two thirds of all major trade fairs from Central Europe are held in Romania and they attract 3-4 million business travelers each year for this only.
Romanians are traveling more and more year by year especially after Romania has joined the EU hence no visa or passport (around Europe) needed for traveling Romanians. Also, every year there are few new airline companies entering Romania therefore new destinations around the world available every year most of them with direct flights.
Based on all of the above, Romania it is a market with great potential for both: incoming or outgoing tourism.
