Sistemul de evaluare IIHS include: test pentru impact frontal la o viteză de 64 km/h (40 de mile/h), test de impact lateral la o viteză de 50 km/h (31 mile/h), test de impact din spate la 32 km/h (20 mile/h) şi testarea rezistenţei plafonului. Comportamentul urmărit prin intermediul acestor teste este ulterior cotat cu “Bun”, “Acceptabil”, “Mediocru” sau “Slab”, luându-se în considerare deformarea vehiculului şi performanţele echipamentelor de siguranţă. Un autovehicul primeşte cotaţia Top Safety Pick dacă obţine scorul “Bun” la toate cele 4 teste.
