Krzysztof Kieślowski was one of the most influential European filmmakers of the late 20th century.

Born on June 27, 1941, in Warsaw, Poland, he initially trained in theater before enrolling at the prestigious Łódź Film School, where he developed his distinctive visual and narrative style.

Kieślowski began his career directing documentaries, focusing on the everyday lives of ordinary people under the constraints of Communist Poland. This early work shaped his sensitivity to realism and ethical ambiguity, but he gradually moved toward fiction, seeking greater artistic freedom and philosophical depth.
He rose to international prominence with The Decalogue (1989), a ten-part television series inspired by the Ten Commandments, in which he explored universal moral dilemmas through intimate, character-driven stories. Each episode presents ordinary individuals confronted with profound ethical choices, reflecting Kieślowski’s fascination with fate, coincidence, and the hidden connections between people.

His final and perhaps most celebrated works are the Three Colours trilogy, Blue (1993), White (1994), and Red (1994), named after the colors of the French flag and inspired by the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. These films combine emotional subtlety with visual elegance, examining grief, identity, justice, and human interconnectedness with remarkable restraint and depth.

He retired from filmmaking shortly after completing the trilogy and died on March 13, 1996, in Warsaw at the age of 54. Despite his relatively short career, Kieślowski left a lasting legacy, influencing generations of filmmakers and remaining a central figure in world cinema.
