🇪🇺 The European Commission (https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_26_723) has officially launched an investigation into Snapchat

The platform is now under a full probe under the Digital Services Act (DSA): regulators want to find out whether Snapchat is actually protecting children and teenagers — or just pretending to.

🧩 What exactly did regulators find problematic?

1️⃣ Age verification
Snapchat allows users aged 13 and older, but the European Commission believes its current age-checking mechanisms are too weak. In practice, a child can simply enter an older age, while an adult can pretend to be a teenager. Regulators also raised concerns about the system for reporting accounts belonging to children below the minimum age: according to the Commission, it either works poorly or is not easily accessible directly within the app.

2️⃣ Contact with dangerous adults
The Commission suspects that Snapchat does not do enough to protect minors from grooming, sexualized contact, and attempts to involve them in criminal activity. The problem is made worse by the fact that adults may register as teenagers, while the system fails to detect or stop this early on.

3️⃣ Default settings
Another concern is Snapchat’s default privacy and safety settings. According to the European Commission, they do not provide children with a sufficient level of protection: teenagers may be too easy to discover by other users, while safety settings during registration are not explained clearly enough.

4️⃣ Illegal and age-inappropriate content
The Commission also believes Snapchat may not be effectively limiting content related to drugs, vapes, and alcohol. This becomes especially serious when minors are exposed to such material.

5️⃣ Complaints and moderation
Regulators are also questioning the platform’s reporting system itself: in their view, it may be too difficult for users to report illegal content, while the appeal process for moderation decisions remains insufficiently transparent.

The European Commission can now request additional data, carry out inspections, and introduce interim measures if necessary. If the violations are confirmed, Snapchat could face very serious consequences — including sanctions under the DSA.
