Given the conflict in Ukraine, the Portuguese government has made available several aid programmes and services for Portuguese and Ukrainian citizens who are on the ground or moving to Portugal.

A special status has been created for Ukrainian citizens coming to Portugal, which waives the need for a visa and grants temporary protection.

Temporary Protection Regime

The Portuguese government has applied the temporary protection regime for Ukrainian citizens and their relatives who cannot return to their country due to the war situation.

The regime also covers citizens of other nationalities who are relatives, relations, spouses or non-marital partnership of citizens of Ukrainian nationality who are also unable to return to Ukraine for the same reason.

When they arrive in Portugal, they are given a Temporary Protection Status, which includes the automatic granting of:

Residence Permit
Tax Identification Number (NIF)
Social Security Identification Number (NISS)
National Health Service (SNS) user number.

These identification numbers give access to various services, such as health care in public facilities, enrollment in job offers, social protection, among others.

The protection has an initial duration of one year, which can be extended for another year, as long as the conditions preventing people from returning to their country continue to prevail.

SEF detains foreign national wanted for attempted murder and theft

The Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) has detained, yesterday, at Lisboa Airport, a foreign national upon who an arrest warrant, for extradition purposes, for murder and theft, has been issued by the Swiss authorities.

The citizen has arrived to Lisboa on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, and has been intercepted at the documentary control.

Upon several procedural steps carried out by SEF, he has been led and brought before the Judicial Court of the judicial district of Lisboa for confirmation of the arrest. He will be later on brought before the Court of Appeal, according to as establishment by the judicial authority of the Court of Appeal.

Yesterday at Lisboa Airport as well, another foreign national has been detained for using a fraudulent Austrian passport, when trying to board Southampton, United Kingdom.

SEF detains convicted wanted by INTERPOL

​The Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) has detained, today, one 35-year-old foreign national living in Portugal.

With an international arrest warrant issued by INTERPOL, SEF inspectors have carried out an investigation which resulted in his arrest on the southern shore of Lisboa.

The foreign national was wanted for economic fraud for which he already had been convicted to an effective imprisonment sentence of 10 years.

He will be brought before the Court of Appeal of Lisboa.
