My message today is directed to all foreign citizens that need a fiscal representative in Portugal, specially our friends from Britain.

Did you know that with Brexit is mandatory for you to have an assigned fiscal representative in Portugal? Until now all United Kingdom residents, as part of the European Union, had no obligation to nominate this representative as there used to be communication between the country and the EU. As the transition period has now ended all non-residents have until June 30 to nominate a fiscal representative; not doing so may incur a penalty that can go from 150€ to 7500€.
Your fiscal representative has the following responsibilities:
- Receiving any fiscal communications on behalf of the non-European citizen;
- Ensuring that this citizen is aware of all mandatory obligations and deadlines and also of all penalties that result from non-compliance with the tax obligations;
- Ensuring that payments are done within their specific deadlines.
It is important to realise that when payment deadlines are not met the responsibility goes on to the represented. That being the case, when payments are due, the Portuguese fiscal authorities can ensue with repossession of assets.
