Paula Rego, born in Lisbon in 1935, made a significant and enduring impact on the art world with her powerful and evocative works. Raised in Ericeira, she was deeply influenced by the folktales her grandmother and aunt told her, which later shaped her artistic vision. Paula Rego painted to confront her fears: living under a dictatorship and being a woman in a repressive society. Though trained in classical painting, she rebelled and used pastels to narrate tales and taboos, bringing to life the secrets and stories she carried within her. Paula Rego passed away on June 8, 2022, but her brilliant works continue to move us.
