Fiestas Patronales of Vieques are scheduled to take place from July 16 to July 19, 2026, centering around the island's Public Plaza. The traditional summer festival features a vibrant carnival, amusement rides, artisan crafts, local food kiosks, and live musical performances.

There is one sound that tells a Boricua they are finally home. 🐸 The moment the sun goes down in El Yunque, the whole rainforest begins to sing, and the singer is smaller than your thumb. The coquí, named for the two note call the males make all night long, co-kee, co-kee, is the unofficial voice of Puerto Rico.

There are around seventeen species of these tiny tree frogs on the island, a few found nowhere else on earth. They need the warm, wet nights of places like El Yunque to survive, and a couple of species have already fallen silent forever. The old saying goes that the coquí only truly sings in Puerto Rico, and generations of Boricuas far from home have sworn it is true. 🌿

El Yunque itself has been protected since 1876, one of the oldest forest reserves in the Americas, and that protection is part of why the coquí still fills its nights with song. To save the frog is to save the forest, and to save a little piece of what it means to be from here.
